A  resurgent Wales team were crowned the Kings Of The Home Nations after winning the Home Nations 6 a side Championships.

The team, who will compete in the European 6 a side Championships to be held in Vrsar, Croatia this Autumn, beat England 1-0 and drew 0-0 with Scotland – who reached the Quarter Finals of the 2014 European event – to claim the trophy in front of large crowds.

This victory marked quite a turn-around for the team, who finished bottom of the Home Nations last season, losing 5-0 to England along the way.

Following that loss a new Manager was appointed. Respected South Wales Football Coach and Referee Barry John also brought with him some new players, scouted at trials across the country. Barry was modest about the achievement, commenting: “Well done to all the players, I am very proud of them. It was a great tournament.”

The proud Welshman, though, was emotional and added: “I kept the trophy in my house on the Saturday night, and on Sunday I woke up and found it wasn’t a dream, and we had really won it!”

The new look side went to Montenegro last autumn and picked up their first points at European level, and would have qualified for the second round but for a heart-breaking late loss to Bulgaria and their upward curve has continued. The United Kingdom Minifootball Association – who operate the team – admitted they were delighted with the progression: “It’s no exaggeration to say what has been achieved in the 11 months since Barry took over has been unbelievable. Wales are an attacking, progressive side, and there is no doubt they can go to Croatia in September and be a real threat this time."

The Home Nations matches formed the centrepoint of the UK 6 a side Championships, which saw well over 250 teams taking part in Birmingham.

The competition was won by a team from Milton Keynes.
